Alvaro Arbeloa says that Chelsea manager José Mourinho should not be sacked
Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa says that Chelsea manager José Mourinho should not be sacked since he can guarantee success.
The Portuguese is on the verge of being sacked from his role as the Chelsea manager owing to poor results, which has left the club 15th in the table with only three league wins throughout the campaign. After the recent 3-1 defeat against Liverpool, morale cannot be any lower amongst the players and the supporters. The fans have been supportive of the manager with banners in this recent home game, but Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is sure to be concerned about the club’s future.
Failure to qualify for the Champions League next season will be disastrous for the club in terms of finances, as even appearing in the group stages is worth £ 30 million. The new deal that kicks in from next season is also thought to be more lucrative. As a top club, Chelsea can expect to reach the quarter-finals as a bare minimum. In such a case, the loss of income can extended towards £ 50 million. Since Mourinho recently signed a new four-year contract, his payout would be around £ 30 million. This appears to be the only factor that has saved his job so far.
“He could retire today and he would [still] go down as one of the best coaches in history. Mourinho’s problem is that he has got us spoilt. In almost every year, every club he has managed has won things. He is very demanding and he is used to winning. There are other coaches who can go two or three years without winning anything; he is not used to that. Losing really burns him up inside, not giving everything and not winning trophies. It is something that he cannot control,” said Arbeloa.
