Beckham Believes Rooney Can Perform Well

Former Manchester United star David Beckham has stated that he expects Wayne Rooney to deliver at the World Cup 2014. There has been intense criticism of Rooney ahead of the start of the World Cup. The England international has failed to deliver in the last few major tournaments. Even though he has won everything in club football, internationally he is yet to deliver his full potential. At 28 years of age, Rooney comes into the World Cup at the peak of his career. However, his former teammate Paul Scholes recently suggested that Rooney may be past his best.

The 28-year-old, though, has received backing from yet another Manchester United player. This time in the form of David Beckham. The former England international says that Rooney is undoubtedly one of the top players in the world. He has not been able to prove this in the last few tournaments due to one reason or the other. Now that every condition is perfect for him to deliver, Beckham expects the former Everton star to do so. Rooney is expected to play alongside Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge in his favourite position.

England will be opening the World Cup 2014 against Italy, who have been in a poor run of form of late.

"I'd always back Wazza because he's a great talent and a great player for England. Wazza turns up and he always gives everything. I think the fans realise that as well. The games I've seen Wayne play for United, he's been the shining light this season. People say that he hasn't scored at a World Cup but Wazza has always been about more than scoring goals. If he doesn't score, he's always assisting or creating something for the team or working hard for the team,” said the former Real Madrid superstar, who retired from football last summer.
