Gareth Southgate reveals Luke Shaw should return in a week’s time

England head coach Gareth Southgate has revealed that Luke Shaw has not suffered any major problem and he should return to first-team action with Manchester United after the mandatory one-week break. The left-back made his first England start in nearly 18 months during the Nations League game against Spain last week and he managed to make a meaningful contribution with an assist.

Despite this, the Three Lions suffered their first defeat at the Wembley Stadium in over two years and the game also ended on a sour note for Shaw after he got concussed following an aerial collision with Spain’s Dani Carvajal. Speaking regarding the same, Southgate confirmed that Shaw has returned to normalcy after the incident and he should return to first-team action once the mandatory rest period is complete, he said: “All being well he has a mandatory six to seven-day rest period, but he should be back as soon as that is done.”

“ England have now gone through three matches with defeats since the semi-final“ of the World Cup and Southgate feels the team need to put an end to the winless run, he added: “There are not many sides who have played a World Cup semi-final and third-place playoff.“ We don't want to “ get in the habit of losing matches. "There's a lot of competition for places. We have invested in the core of this squad.”

England suffered a 2-1 defeat to Spain during their Nations League opener last week but they could have quite easily drawn the game, had they taken the opportunities at hand. Moreover, the Three Lions also had a goal controversially chalked off right at the end by the referee but they should feel hard done by to get nothing from the game. England entertain Switzerland in a friendly on Tuesday night.
